As HKUST expanded electric vehicle charging infrastructure across campus, the university needed a straightforward way for drivers to activate a charger and pay for the electricity they used - without cash, without a physical card, and without staff having to manage transactions manually. HKUST engaged Beautitag Limited to build a dedicated mobile app that would handle this end-to-end, from starting a session at the charger to settling the bill afterwards.
Beautitag delivered HKUST EV, a native iOS and Android app centered around a simple "Scan & Go" flow: drivers point their camera at the QR code posted on the charging station to start a session instantly, with no separate access card or manual check-in required. Once charging begins, the app shows live session details - elapsed charging time, energy delivered in kWh, and the running estimated price - directly on the home screen. When the vehicle reaches a full charge, the app sends an immediate push notification so drivers know exactly when to return and disconnect. A dedicated Sessions tab lets users review pending and completed payments and browse their full charging history at a glance. The app currently supports HKUST's standard and medium AC chargers; fast chargers are outside its current scope.
Beautitag's role was scoped specifically to the software: designing and building the mobile app, its session-activation flow, and its payment handling. The physical charging hardware and its installation across campus were deployed separately by HKUST and its infrastructure partners. Beautitag focused on making the software layer - activation, live monitoring, notifications, and payment - as frictionless as possible for the end user.
HKUST EV launched on 1 July 2026 and is now available for the HKUST community on both major mobile platforms, with a HarmonyOS release in development. By replacing manual activation and payment with a scan-and-go experience, Beautitag has given HKUST a modern, self-service way to support electric vehicle adoption on campus.
